Week 7: Student Activism
Hello and welcome to week 7 of my blog!
It's almost Spring Break, which means the time is going to fly by so quickly now until the end of school. I can't believe it!
However, this week's blog topic is going to be focused on student activism and the roles we have in changing our educational environments. A recent example of student activism here at Chico State was a student ICE protest at the career fair due to their presence here on campus.
This was a major stand for transforming our educational environment to make it safer for Latinx and minority students. Student activism is also a chance for students to get their voices heard and advocate for positive change that affects us directly. Something that more directly affected me was the student workers' wage strike that allowed us to get a raise in our salary by around 5%. These examples just go to show that activism can be effective in achieving our goals.
Student activism has also played a role in the field that I would like to go into (speech-language pathology). My own cohort has even participated for two years in a row where we send emails to our representatives about the cost of education for graduate students. We have received some feedback and acknowledgment, so I hope that by continuing to push we can create change for us and future generations to be able to afford higher education.
Overall, I feel as if my education is sufficient and I've learned a lot from my time here at Chico State. From my time as a freshman to a current senior, I've learned so much about myself and what I enjoy. If I could think of one thing that has been missing, it is diversity for students of color, such as myself. However, I have loved my experience here at Chico State and will miss it.
