Week 3 Blog!
Hello week three!
It's been a crazy hectic week. Lots of assignments due before Spring Break and trying my best to balance schoolwork and life. Today, I got to watch the Oscars, which of course is all the talk right now on social media. I personally had some of my favorites I wanted to win, but I am happy with everyone who won their Academy Award.
While we are on the topic of today's trend and the community surrounding the Oscars right now, today's topic will be about social capital.
What is social capital?
Social capital is the value of relationships and networks that create trust, cooperation, and mutual support within a community, leading to shared benefits and opportunities. It's with this that can allow companies, businesses, or individuals to advance our goals.
Social capital is that invisible force that makes things happen—not because of money, but because of connections, goodwill, and shared purpose. It’s what turns a group of people into a movement. It’s why some nonprofits thrive while others struggle. It’s why businesses with strong communities grow faster than those that only focus on transactions.
For instance: If people don’t trust an organization, they won’t donate. If volunteers don’t feel connected, they won’t stay involved. I believe that by building our social capital we can simultaneously build trust with those around us.
I think this concept can also play into how we feel more connected and inclined to follow people we share ideas, passions, or struggles with. It is easier to build trust with someone who can also understand what you are going through.
For the remainder of my blog, I hope to use my experiences to build relationships and social capital with my peers who are also students. Some who also may be seniors graduating soon and feeling those anxious feelings about; what's next? I know I am!
